Four oxisol profiles from the state of Parana were studied. They are derived from igneous extrusive rocks but located in different climatic zone within the state. The main objective was to accumulate information that would lead to a better understanding of subtropical and tropical oxisols from a classification viewpoint. The objective was accomplished by studying the physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of the four soil profiles. The soils were sampled in smooth landscapes in tropical and subtropical areas. The mean annual temperature ranges from 15.5C to 20.6C and the mean annual precipitation ranges from 1,400 to 1,900mm. Kaolinite, gibbsite and vermiculite-chlorite intergrade are the most common minerals in the clay size fractions of every profile. Quartz is the main mineral in the silt fraction and, together with opaque minerals (magnetite and ilmenite) predominates in the coarse and fine sand fractions of every profile. Hematite was detected only when free iron oxides were not removed by the citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite (CBD) treatment. The same was true for goethite. Based on the relative proporties of gibbsite in relation to kaolinite the degree of weathering was Profile 4 > Profile 39 > Profile 18 > Profile 61. A relatively strong 14 A peak that did not completely collapse upon heating to 500 oC indicated the presence of a vermiculite-chlorite intergrade in the A and B horizons of every profile. Since, only very weak diffractions of the same mineral were observed in the C horizons of the....... MenosFour oxisol profiles from the state of Parana were studied.
